Para b-ballers secure place in U23 World C'ships

TEHRAN, Jan. 28 (MNA) – National Iranian wheelchair basketball overcame Japan to crown at U23 Asia Oceania Zone qualifying tournament for the U23 World Championships.

The sportive event was held from 23-28 January in Bangkok of Thailand where the Iranian outfit pulled out a 67-51 victory over Japanese rivals to stand on top of the podium.

Also, Australia and Thailand competed the bronze medal match at the end of which Austrians became victorious and, along with Iran and Japan, received tickets to the U23 World Championships in 2017.

Iran had previously conceded a defeat against Japan in the final group stage encounter. Earlier, the Iranian squad breezed past Thailand, India, Australia and China in the first stage before quelling Australia for a second time in the semifinal round.

Amirreza Ahmadi, Mahdi Mazloum, Mahdi Mandegar, Ali Karimi, Mojtaba Kamali, Mohammad Sayari, Homayoun Asgari, Mahdi Abbasi, Peyman Mizan, Hassanali Kabi, Seyed Mahdi Mousavi, Reza Eyvazi represented Iran at the qualifying tournament.

The six teams in the tournament from across the Zone were competing for three spots at the U23 World Championships in Toronto, Canada in June included Thailand, Iran, Australia, China, India and Japan.
